On the occasion of World Cleanup Day, the European Commission and United Nations will be joining forces with the City of Brussels to recognise the work of those who clean the city each day and raise awareness about the impact of littering – from the city centre to the bottom of the ocean.
We will come together with Brussel's road sweepers to accompany them on their cleaning rounds.
Timing: anytime, from 11:00 to 16:00. You are free to stay as long as you want.
Equipment: The City of Brussels can provide rubbish bags, garbage clamps, gloves, and fluorescent vests (subject to stock availability). The equipment will be provided at the location you have selected. The clamps will be shared among participants and must be returned after the action.
We encourage you to bring your own gloves, to avoid waste
Adresses of the waste collection. At each location, there will be a waste management dépôt and/or a stand to provide the equipment and soft drinks to the participants.

Description

Why is it important to clean the city? Because the sea starts here!
Sewers are only meant to collect wastewater and rainwater. They are not dustbins! However, a lot of our waste ends up there, such as cigarette butts, plastic packaging, etc.
In fact, everything we throw down the sink, the toilet or a drain ends up in the sewers and then in the treatment plants and sometimes even directly in nature, for example in certain so-called buffer waters such as the Brussels canal, certain lakes, etc.
Cigarette butts, dirt, medicines, wipes, frying oils, toxic liquids, etc. regularly clog up the public sewage system and the treatment plants. The ecosystems of these buffer zones are then polluted. In addition, during heavy rainfall, sewers can overflow into waterways: ‘storm overflows' prevent overflows into streets and cellars, but carry waste into our waterways.
This is why this event is part of the #EUbeachCleanup campaign.
