#Potavristou beach clean up

One of AKTI’s most powerful and multi-awarded initiatives is the #Potavristou campaign, a citizen science-driven social media movement run each September to raise awareness about plastic pollution and promote environmental responsibility. “Potavristou,” meaning “lend a hand” in the Greek Cypriot dialect, calls on people worldwide to pick up litter, especially on beaches, while collecting data on litter type and source, sharing photos, and reporting findings. Over the past six years, the campaign has engaged 13,200 volunteers, who have removed 93 tons of litter from 1,670 locations worldwide, including Singapore, the Philippines, California, and Japan. As part of this year’s #Potavristou celebrations, AKTI will host a cleanup at Geroskipou Square during the 1st Loukoumi Festival. In collaboration with the Folklore Association Afroditi and the Municipality of Geroskipou, AKTI will celebrate the first Loukoumi of Geroskipou Festival, honoring this iconic Cypriot sweet, listed on the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. AKTI’s Sustainability Booth will feature interactive activities on the green transition, and democratic participation, as part of the RESisles project, co-funded by the European Union.
