On September 24, 2025, as part of the EU Beach Cleanup campaign promoted by the European Union during International Coastal Cleanup Week, an environmental awareness event took place at Buarcos Beach, in Figueira da Foz. The initiative was organized by the Intermunicipal Community of Coimbra Region, +Climagir and Europe Direct Coimbra and Leiria Regions, with the support of the Municipality of Figueira da Foz. The event aimed to educate and engage young people on the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. A total of 113 children from local schools participated, actively contributing to the cleanup and learning about the environmental impact of marine litter and the role of recycling. Over a two-hour period, approximately 25 kilograms of waste were collected from the beach. Participants also took part in educational activities led by environmental experts and volunteers, addressing topics such as ocean pollution, marine biodiversity, and the EU’s commitment to the European Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals. This local action was part of a global movement coordinated by the EU to combat marine pollution and raise awareness of ocean conservation. The organizers thank all participants and partners for their dedication to a cleaner and more sustainable coastline.
