This year, to celebrate World Clean-Up Day 2026, the EU Delegation to Ghana is organising a Beach Clean-Up with the Or Foundation and Planet Waves. The event will take place on the 19th of September, at the James Town beach, and is scheduled to kick off at 14.00 in the afternoon. Each year, 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean. Additionally, in Ghana, millions of unsold and unwanted items of fast fashion clothing items make their way from Europe and North America, where they pollute the seas and coastlines of the country. This has a grave impact on both local biodiversity and on local livelihoods. As part of the EU’s Blue Economy approach, the EU Delegation to Ghana seeks to promote economic growth and improve livelihoods, while ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources and the well-being of coastal communities. World Clean-Up Day 2026 is no exception and sets the stage to raise awareness of the need for better waste management systems and environmental care in Ghana, as well as the need to curb the demand for fast fashion worldwide.
