The Bodrog is a picturesque river with special cultural and environmental significance. The river is supplied by the surface waters of the Carpathian Mountains. Unseen by many, an estimated of 90 tonnes of riverine waste is laying in the floodplain just in the Hungarian section. Floods regularly deliver waste from Ukraine via the Latorica and Uzh rivers to the Bodrog where it traps in the floodplain. The first Plastic Cup community cleanup race on the Bodrog took place in 2020, becoming an annual tradition held each September since then. Over the course of five years, approximately 45 tonnes of waste have been removed from floodplains of the Bodrog river and, following the Plastic Cup's practice, sorted and recycled. Luckily, upon activation of the local communities along the river many citizens, municipalities and schools joined and organizing also cleanups by themselves, starting to take care of the river! The sixth Plastic Cup on Bodrog River takes place 10-14 of September, between Sárazsadány and Bodrogkeresztúr. This is also part of the DALIA Danube Lighthouse project – of which general assembly follows the race on 15-16 of September in Bodrogkeresztúr. Some of those experts join the cleanup race, too!
