Reducing reporting burdens and making EU rules simpler are important priorities for the European Commission under its Competitiveness Agenda.
To support this work, the Commission launched the study 'Services Supporting DG MARE Simplification Activities' on 27 January 2026. The study collects and analyses evidence on how common fisheries policy (CFP) rules are applied in practice. Its aim is to identify where simplification may be possible.
The study is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) on behalf of DG MARE. It is carried out by a consortium led by Deloitte Netherlands, together with MRAG Europe Limited, Multicultural Insights, and Wageningen University and Research. As part of this study, DG MARE is organising a series of 18 in‑person reality check workshops.
The reality check workshops have 3 main aims
- to hear directly from practitioners
- to understand their real-life experience with CFP rules, including current and future challenges
- to identify practical ideas for simplifying policy while supporting sustainable and viable sectors for future generations
