The workshop was aimed at providing a forum where policy and law experts could meet with representatives from the scientific community - from cruise scientists, to collection and database managers, to microbiologists and genomics experts – and representatives from the private sectors as well as those responsible for negotiating the future instrument on marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ process).
The Workshop was opened by the H. E. Ambassador Rena Lee, the President of the of the Intergovernmental Conference on BBNJ, who delivered the Keynote Address
The geographical outreach of this workshop was broad and brought together a wide range of views from developed and developing countries alike. These views are being taken into consideration for the future instrument dealing with these issues.
