The International Convention for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) annual meeting for 2025 concluded with a positive outcome. This year’s discussions revolved around setting up a total allowable catch (TAC) quota for bluefin tuna for the next three years.

The EU is deeply concerned that most North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) members opposed the EU proposal to set the mackerel total allowable catch (TAC) in line with the scientific advice provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

The EU was granted fishing opportunities for chub mackerel at the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) annual session, held from 15 to 18 April 2024 in Osaka, Japan. Chub mackerel is an important commercial species and EU fishing fleet will be allowed to participate in this NPFC fishery.

ICCAT members adopted recommendations to promote sustainable practices, ensure responsible use of marine resources, and enhance the conservation of vulnerable species.
