EFCA reports on 2019 activities

The 2019 Annual Report of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) was published today.

EFCA’s mission is to promote the highest common standards for control, inspection and surveillance under the EU’s common fisheries policy. Its primary role is to organise coordination and cooperation between national control and inspection activities so that the rules of the CFP are respected and applied effectively.

Throughout 2019, the agency supported Member States and the European Commission in the implementation of the CFP’s control regime. This involved the coordination of joint deployment plans, the development of specific projects related to compliance with the landing obligation (LO) and new technologies such as remote electronic monitoring (REM) and capacity building operations in relation to third countries.

The European cooperation on coast guard functions enhanced EFCA’s capacity to contribute to an effective and uniform implementation of the CFP. During the year, the agency extended operational cooperation with EUROPOL and EUROJUST in the framework of the European multidisciplinary platform against criminal threats, thus reinforcing the fight against illegal fishing activities.
