The EU's maritime transport industry strives to reduce its impact on the environment with innovative solutions like battery-operated vessels, wind-powered ships and carbon-neutral shipping. The industry sets new environmental goals — but can it deliver?
In this episode, we’ll show how the European shipping industry is advancing towards the 2050 goal of reducing its CO2 emissions down to 50% compared to 2008. We'll start with researchers using drones and other innovative tools to take accurate measurements of vessel emissions close to the port of Hamburg, as a part of an EU-funded SCIPPER project. We’ll introduce Europe’s goals and methods of reducing shipping emissions in an interview with Jaap Gebraad, Executive Director of Waterborne, the European research and innovation platform for waterborne industries. We'll show examples of innovative technologies helping reduce emissions on "the cleanest ship on the Baltic" — MS VIking Grace, a hybrid vessel that along with LNG fuel uses wind propulsion with an innovative rotor sail, developed within an EU-funded project (RotorDEMO). On arrival to Turku, Finland, we’ll show how improvements in logistics and infrastructure reduce ports’ environmental footprint (EU-funded NextGen Link project).
