Euronews OCEAN Season 3 Episode 13 - EU and Africa: A partnership for sustainable fisheries

The EU contributes to sustainable oceans worldwide by concluding sustainable fisheries partnership agreements (SFPA). While these agreements allow EU vessels to fish for surplus stocks in the exclusive economic zone of third countries, they also support local growth and social empowerment, environmental sustainability, human rights and shared accountability. In this episode of OCEAN, we meet some of the people whose life and work have been changed for the better thanks to this cooperation.

In Cabo Verde, we visit coastal communities of Paul and Monte Trigo (Santo Antão island), where the EU support has opened up new employment possibilities for younger generations of fishers, contributed to higher household incomes and reduced fuel consumption. At the port city of Mindelo, we visit a fish processing factory that became the country's largest exporter by hiring local women to process catches landed here by European vessels.

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) is a persistent problem in West Africa. In Ivory Coast, we meet the representatives of the local authorities and the EU Delegation at the region’s largest port, Abidjan, to discuss practical outcomes of their cooperation, and visit a recently opened fisheries monitoring centre that uses high-tech systems to prevent illegal fishing in Ivorian waters.
