As an old saying goes, ”only a fool doesn’t fear the sea”. In 2021, professional fishing and offshore aquaculture remain some of the riskiest jobs with comparatively high rates of accidents. Many accidents in the sector are caused by the difficult working conditions onboard vessels.

Whilst the existing rules to protect workers apply mostly to big vessels, small-scale fisheries are rarely taken into account. In this episode, the OCEAN crew follows a typical day onboard an offshore aquaculture vessel in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, explaining the risks and difficulties of fishers’ work, and show some examples of how the EU support helps improve the working conditions and safety of fishers.
