It does not matter if we live by the coast or close to the mountains, our lives have an impact on the ocean. And understanding the ocean's influence on us and our influence on the ocean is the main objective of ocean literacy. Why is it so important? Because raising public awareness of the connection between the health of the oceans and our human actions can help motivate more people to get engaged and work together for the prosperous blue planet.
The EU4Ocean community is a great example of that. Launched in 2019 by the European Commission, this Europe-wide ocean literacy network of engaged citizens, youth and schools is actively taking ocean knowledge to the wider public through events and fun activities in many European cities. In this episode of Ocean, we will travel to Malta to take part in one of the EU4Ocean festivals for a sneak peek of ocean literacy in action.
Then we’ll go out to sea with a group of cadets of the Dutch social enterprise Sea Rangers — an organisation aiming to train 20,000 unemployed young people for a job in the maritime sector, while at the same time protecting the marine environment.
