Euronews OCEAN Season 4, Episode 6 - How Europe-supported projects are reducing illegal fishing in the Western Indian Ocean

While marine ecosystems decline around the world, the Western Indian Ocean seems to remain in a relatively good shape. Its rich fish stocks provide livelihood to the coastal communities and sustain a thriving fishing industry. But there is a downside to this abundance: this hard to control area has become a hotspot of illegal fishing that puts its future at risk. How does Europe help counter this threat?

Timed to the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, this episode explores regional and multi-country cooperation fostering conservation and sustainable use of the fish resources, using the example of the EU-supported ECOFISH and SFPA cooperation in Seychelles and Mauritius — from the new infrastructure for local small-scale fishing communities to improved fishery monitoring centres, traceability control for exported fish, and joint marine patrols that involve officers from around the region fighting against the illegal fishing in the Western Indian Ocean.

OCEAN is a Euronews magazine in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE). Season 4 features monthly 8-minute videos, where we discover fascinating projects and developments related to the ocean and coastal communities.

Broadcast since 2019, OCEAN features episodes on marine protected areas, small-scale fisheries, ocean energy, aquaculture, IUU fishing, sustainable fisheries and much more. Missed one? Check them out on the Euronews website! You will also find some nice extras about these topics.
