Euronews OCEAN Season 5, Episode 12 – Shark SOS: The initiatives seeking to revive Europe's predator populations

Sharks, as apex predators, are crucial for the well-being of marine ecosystems and serve as a barometer of ocean health. However, many shark populations are now critically endangered. Shark fins have become some of the sea's priciest exports to Asian markets. On top of this, many shark species are often accidentally caught as bycatch.

In this month’s episode, we focus on the European scientists studying the decline of shark populations, raising public awareness and joining efforts with restaurant chefs to mitigate it (EU-funded LIFE European Sharks project). We also meet activists in Fuerteventura who are working to protect one of the most endangered shark species — the angel shark, once plentiful across Europe but now on the brink of extinction.
