Award-winning anchovy art gallery

Supported by the local FLAG, a family processing business has created the first Anchovy Art Gallery in the city of Santoña, the birthplace of the famous Cantabria´s anchovy.

The project enabled the creation of a gallery consisting of two main areas: an exhibition area and a cafeteria/store where the company can offer its processed products. The design of the space is highly innovative, recreating the underwater environment with audiovisual projections.

This initiative arises from the need to diversify the business, established in 1997, which focuses on the artisanal processing of anchovies. It also serves the large number of tourists groups that visit the cannery. Additionally, it addresses the lack of an anchovy art museum in a town rich in canneries, aiming to raise awareness of the sector´s importance to the city culture.

Results

  • Creation of a unique space within the artisanal cannery, where visitors can taste and learn about one of the finest products from the Cantabrian coast.
  • In 2024, the first year of the Gallery´s operation, they welcomed 11,000 visitors. In the coming years, they expect to match that number of visitors annually, thanks to planned promotional activities and engagement with the public.
  • In 2024, this project received the Excellence Award for Innovation in Fishing or Aquaculture, presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of Spain and the Award for Best Good Practice, by the Spanish FLAGs National Network.
