Cooperation for UNESCO cultural heritage status

Nine fisheries Local Action Groups presented a UNESCO candidacy dossier on the traditional fishing practices used in lagoons and at sea to protect and raise awareness of their rich cultural heritage.

The ‘Cultural Heritage of Fisheries’ project has promoted knowledge of trades, artefacts and equipment related to traditional fishing and how this has shaped the identity of local communities and coastal areas across six regions of Italy. The activities linked to the project have included the production of informative material; the creation of a website and a map with the assets; and the production of a 90-minute documentary films, with several individual stories representing this rich cultural heritage. 

Additionally, part of the work has been the process of registering the project in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage supported by UNESCO.

Results

  • Production of a range of communication material promoting traditional fishing.
