Discovering rare corals in Ireland's deep seas

This project explored Ireland's deep oceans, revealing groundbreaking discoveries like never-before-seen sponge reefs, new coral species, and even a shark nursery. Its primary goal was to safeguard delicate marine ecosystems from the impact of fishing activities. Using advanced technology, the team assessed sensitive habitats and made the findings publicly available. Supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, SeaRover emphasised conservation, international collaboration, and public outreach. It also provided invaluable training for young scientists, ensuring continued exploration and protection of Ireland’s rich marine biodiversity.
