An information platform for fishers and fishing academies

Vistikhetmaar project - training course

The Vistikhetmaar project has created an independent web-based knowledge platform of relevant scientific information. The platform is continuously updated to present the most up-to-date information from science and industry on various aspects of sustainable fisheries.

The platform was considered a necessary step in a fishing sector that faces continuous change in terms of both society’s needs and the law. It is time-consuming for individual fishers to follow the stream of information from a multitude of sources. A 'one-stop shop' presenting tailor-made information on a single website addresses this problem by giving fishers and fishing schools easy access to relevant, scientifically based, and up-to-date information.

The project serves two main purposes and has two target groups: It provides information to fishers about the most recent and pressing issues like Brexit, the landing obligation, and environmental requirements; and educational material to the Dutch fisheries schools in a digital format, organised into well-defined dossiers.

The project also includes activities to build trust in the platform and its content, and also to integrate the knowledge of fishers, who are a valuable source of information. This trust-building is primarily based on direct contacts with individual fishers during meetings and one-to-one exchanges. The project also has a “sounding board” composed of 10 active fishers who offer practical feedback.
