Lycée maritime Anita Conti

Anita Conti Maritime High School in Fécamp, Normandy, produced visually engaging comics on proper safety practices at sea to ensure that illiterate fishers can understand essential safety materials.

The 'Comics on Safety and Emergency at Sea' project offers creative, visually intuitive safety and emergency training materials designed to promote safety awareness among fishers, particularly in light of the high illiteracy rates within the fishing industry. Fishing is one of the most hazardous professions globally, with the highest rate of work accidents and significant levels of illiteracy.

The project provides textless comics to convey critical safety and emergency protocols, making these materials accessible to all, regardless of literacy levels. These comics are copyright-free and intended to be widely distributed to non-readers across multiple languages and regions, including cooperation projects in Madagascar and Indonesia.

Results

  • Production of 5 different educational comics with unique colour codes, printed on durable waterproof materials to withstand harsh conditions at sea.
  • Distribution of the comics to all students at Anita Conti Maritime School, 340 fishers in Normandy, and partnering fishers in Indonesia and Madagascar.
  • Equipping 340 fishing vessels Normandy with these comics.
