Pilot fishing vessel shows the potential for sail power

Skravik project France

The Skravik project is studying the feasibility of reducing the environmental footprint of fishing in coastal areas by reintroducing sailing as a way to source food sustainably.

The wind is a free and sustainable resource offering maritime activities a tremendous opportunity to move away from fossil fuels. Brittany is the centre of marine innovation in France, with emblematic projects in every sector of work. One of these projects is Skravik, based in Finistère in Brittany, which is reviving wind propulsion for artisanal fishing through a prototype catamaran.

At the same time, the project partners are studying how to distribute seafood in local chains with the minimum of food miles, seeking cooperation with consumers to make the most of all the species caught.

Results

To balance ambitions with reality both at sea and on land, Skravik has opted for a concrete demonstration backed by careful reasoning, transforming an old pleasure catamaran, a Corneel 26, into a prototype fishing vessel.

The prototype was presented at the Winds for Good show in Saint-Nazaire.
