Pond renovation to support aquaculture and flood mitigation

Renewal of an existing small reservoir in the Czech Republic will support fish breeding and aquaculture production, as well as retaining water to reduce flooding.

Above the Czech village of Křtěnovice, south-east of Prague, a stream flows past several old ponds. This project aims to dredge and renovate one of the ponds and build a new aquaculture unit to support fish breeding. The company operates around 30 ha of aquaculture ponds in total, and the project will increase production of carp and other fish for the restaurant trade. The added water storage capacity will also help to mitigate the risk of both drought and local flooding.

Results

  • New aquaculture unit will increase fish production.
  • Increased production of hatched fish will make the beneficiary more competitive.
  • The restoration will contribute to biodiversity and protect against both drought and flooding.
