Release of eels to improve population

© Michael Ingemann Pedersen, DTU Aqua

Through scientific trials assessing growth and survival, researchers at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU Aqua) used EMFF funds to help release eels into the wild and assess the contribution of eel releases to the Danish management plan.

DTU Aqua (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet) organize the release of young eels in Danish inland waters in order to enhance the spawning stock. Prior to release, commercial eel farmers grew glass eels to a weight of 2-5 grams. After veterinarian health checks the farmed eels were distributed to 62 local water bodies where recreational fishers and landowners assisted in their release. The growth and survival of the released eels was monitored in ponds and rivers.

Results

  • Release of 1,625,000 eels in 35 lakes and 27 rivers
  • 880,000 eels released in lakes and 745,000 eels released in streams
  • Comparing performance of farmed eels to wild eels showed no significant difference in survival between wild and farmed during the first 5 months
  • Survival and growth were negatively correlated with stocking density
  • An “Action plan for releasing eels in 2019” can be found on DTU Aqua’s news portal: www.fiskepleje.dk
