The shortest way to the plate

A fish farm invested in a themed restaurant to attract customers the whole year round to this Natura 2000 area and provide products and services that add value to its fish production.

The family fish farm of Tadeusz Bałata is situated in calm and picturesque area of the Sandomierz Forest. In three successive projects supported by the local fisheries LAG, the owners have created a fish restaurant with high windows and terraces from which clients can observe the nature surrounding the fishponds, including different species of birds. They can even angle for the fish.

The period of fish sales, typically concentrated in December, has been extended, the range of fish species has been expanded (in addition to carp, it includes species such as pike, tench or catfish), and equipment has been purchased for on-farm processing. The owners also serve vegetables from their own garden in the restaurant. Other fish farms from the area of a neighbouring fisheries LAG provide certain fish species which Mr Bałata does not produce (e.g. trout). A follow-up project increased the capacity of the restaurant and added a refrigerated fish preparation space, thus enabling the owners to maintain the year-round employment of the restaurant staff.

Results

  • The creation of the restaurant made it possible to maintain fish farm incomes throughout the year.
  • The season when the farm can receive income from fish production has been extended all year round.
  • There is good potential to promote the restaurant and the bird-watching activity among other businesses, notably hotels in the area.
