Euronews Ocean season 2, episode 7: What’s wrong with eastern Baltic cod?

The pandemic isn’t the only problem for Polish fishermen: for months, their vessels couldn’t leave port due to the ongoing ban on catching cod. What’s wrong with the most popular white fish in Europe? In this episode, we visit Kołobrzeg, a Polish port city traditionally relying on eastern Baltic cod.

We meet local fishers, processors and shipbuilders to learn firsthand how the cod emergency impacts their work. Next, we talk to DTU Aqua scientists in Denmark, presenting current understanding of the complex environmental drivers of high cod mortality in the Baltic, and explaining why fishing restrictions are a necessary measure to ensure sustainability of the sea and long-term future of fisheries.

Tune in to Euronews from 1 September @ 20:50 CET – on any platform.
