Euronews OCEAN Season 3 Episode 10: Towards a sustainable Baltic Sea

One of the world’s most polluted water bodies, the Baltic Sea is facing a wide range of environmental threats that decimate its fish stocks and threaten coastal economies. The EU is leading the recovery effort, supporting a number of projects in the Baltic countries that are studying the main sources of pollution and finding ways to mitigate them.

In this episode, marking the first anniversary of the groundbreaking “Our Baltic” conference, we’ll join Estonian activists and researchers of the CleanEST project cleaning abandoned industrial areas from pollutants carried by rivers into the Baltic Sea. We’ll also visit a heavy industry enterprise in Lithuania that benefited from another EU-supported project, FIT FOR REACH, to replace harmful chemical substances in its production process with safer alternatives: this at-the-source approach reduces one of the main causes of the Baltic Sea pollution — persistent bio-accumulative toxic substances (PBT) that end up in the food chain with harmful effects on living organism.

Also in Lithuania, we interview Virginijus Sinkevičius, the European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries and formerly Lithuania’s Minister of Economy, one of the key proponents of the “Our Baltic” objectives.
