Automating data collection on fishing boats

The VISTools app uses smart sensors onboard to monitors catch details, fuel consumption, and location in real-time, providing skippers and shipowners valuable operational insights.

Traditionally, fishing has relied on manual logs, but this digital alternative integrates GIS mapping for more accurate catch tracking across fishing territory. Supported by EMFF funding, the VISTools project has grown to a commercial level, enabling the development of an initial data system, which has in turn supported the development of hardware and the installation of VIStools on board five vessels to test how it could be scaled up.

Results

  • VISTools has scaled to 62% of Belgium’s fleet, after being initially tested on five vessels.
  • A collaborative, scalable, user-focused app was developed, that lays the foundation for further precision fishing innovation.
  • Automating data collection and providing real-time insights helps improve both economic and environmental outcomes.
