Leading the way in sustainable aquaculture

This trout farm integrated solar energy, waste management innovations, and community engagement, becoming a regional hub for renewable energy, biodiversity, and education.

With EU funding, the farm installed solar panels and an electric vehicle charging station to achieve self-sufficiency in renewable energy. Energy audits conducted across six local farms helped reduce reliance on conventional power, while water audits improved management during low-flow conditions. Additionally, the farm introduced a waste dehydrator to reduce fish processing waste.

The farm also expanded its role as a training center for sustainable fish farming and actively engaged the local community through biodiversity initiatives and educational programs on sustainability. It organized workshops and installed information boards to raise awareness about sustainability and biodiversity. These activities have helped foster a strong connection between the farm and the local community.

Results

  • Reduction of carbon footprint of fish production and processing through the establishment of a self-sufficient solar power plant and the purchase of a waste dehydrator
  • Preservation and improvement of biodiversity through the cultivation of suitable plants and the installation of insect hotels
  • Training of five local fish farmers in sustainable fish production and processing
  • Development of six studies on energy consumption and water use in fish farms
