The Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture’s Fisheries Service used funding to implement their eel management plans, to contribute to the recovery of eel stocks in Lithuania and across European eel habitats. The main activities of the project included purchasing European eels for restocking, tagging them for monitoring purposes, restocking of selected waterways, and studying mortality, migration patterns and successful integration.

Results

  • In 2024, about 1,152,000 adolescent European eels were introduced into state-managed water bodies.
  • 10% of the eels released during the project were tagged for monitoring and migration tracking.
  • The fish farming infrastructure was adapted with a special RAS aquaculture system for eel quarantine and growth, and glass eel stocking material was purchased after expert assessments.
  • A specialised vehicle was acquired for eel transport.
