Restoring a historical ship to create an outdoor museum

The Lambousa, a 1955 wooden fishing trawler, has been transformed into a floating museum showcasing the area's rich maritime heritage.

Restored by the municipality with support from the Fisheries Local Action Group (LAG), The Lambousa preserves traditional fishing techniques and tools used by Cypriot fishers. The vessel offers visitors an immersive experience, with restored gear and historical insights. Symbolising Cyprus’s fishing culture, the Lambousa also plays a role in European projects to preserve its legacy, with future plans to train new generations in traditional fishing methods.

Results

  • Three jobs maintained.
  • Preserving heritage sustains Cyprus' cultural identity for future generations.
  • University students were involved to create an eBook and interactive platform exploring the ship's history and restoration.
  • The restored vessel is one of Cyprus' last traditional fishing boats, preserving a heritage type no longer built in Cyprus or Greece.
