From seaweed harvesting to sea urchin conservation

A family-run aquaculture business has developed an innovative facility to co-cultivate sea urchins, for re-stocking,with sustainable seaweed products.

Growing sea urchin at Algafrés production facility

The family, long known for their sustainable seaweed production, uses their own algae to cultivate and nourish sea urchins through their life cycle. Collaborating with local marine scientists and the fishing guilds, they transport adult urchins from the facility to vulnerable fisheries for restocking. This approach ensures that conditions for reintroduction are optimal, helping to restore healthy sea urchin populations.

Results

  • Restoring a key Galician product to prevent market loss due to dwindling catches.
  • Contributing to Galicia’s resilience by supporting the recovery of sea urchin populations.
  • Promoting the inclusion of multi-trophic aquaculture and low trophic species in Spain’s aquaculture policies.
  • The project’s success has sparked international interest in replicating the system for sustainable marine restoration.
