Euronews Ocean season 2, episode 9: Marine litter

In the EU, 20% of fishing gear is lost at sea. Abandoned, lost or disposed of, it accounts for about a third of marine litter found in European seas, or over 11,000 tons per year.

In this episode, timed to this year's #EUBeachCleanup campaign, we'll visit Croatia and Italy to see how the EU-funded 'marGnet' project is mapping and recycling ghost nets and other marine litter. We’ll meet Croatian fishers working with EU researchers to minimise ghost net pollution, take a SCUBA dive with underwater cleanup campaigners at the Cres-Lošinj archipelago, and join a cleanup action at the world-famous Venetian canals in Italy, while learning about marGnet-developed method of converting collected plastic waste into diesel fuel.
