The Compensation 2023 Rybářství Třeboň a.s. project aimed to support and financially compensate pond managers for using their ponds for ecological and social services like water retention, biodiversity support and recreational use, rather than standard fish production. The project´s ultimate goal was to strengthen the aquaculture sector's competitiveness and resilience, while contributing to biodiversity, environmental and climate change mitigation.

The project was carried out in several phases, including

  • Identification and selection of ponds with potential for ecological services, based on input from environmental authorities
  • Assessment of functions such as water retention, natural littoral zones and wetland preservation, and fertilizer restrictions
  • One-year financial compensation for pond managers who implemented and maintained these functions

Collaboration among partners was essential for the project’s success; the intermediate authority managed the overall implementation and fund distribution, local environmental agencies identified ecologically significant ponds and issued recommendations, and pond managers contributed data, ensuring compliance with ecological measures and delivery of ecological functions.

Results

  • 117 ponds (2–5 hectares each, totaling 318.29 hectares) received compensation, supporting one to three non-productive functions like water retention.
  • One pond (3.55 hectares) was designated for sporting or recreational use.
  • 90 ponds (220 hectares) received compensation for maintaining natural littoral zones and wetlands.
  • 27 ponds (57.65 hectares) were compensated for implementing restrictions on the use of mineral and organic fertilizers, contributing to improved water quality and biodiversity.
