Christer Wannebro was an early adopter of a new production system in 2019, Gårdsfisk, meaning “Fish from the farm”. The Gårdsfisk model was developed in Sweden using EU funds and supplies spawning fish to participating farms before buying back mature fish to either fillet, mince, or smoke in their own facilities.
Two different fish species are produced: Nile tilapia and African sharptooth catfish. The Gårdsfisk concept makes it possible to produce sustainable food in a circular process, where waste from the fish is used as fertilizer on farms.
A full production system has been up and running on Wannebro’s former pig farm since December 2021. Wannebro’s farm was the first to adopt the Gårdsfisk concept, but more farmers are now set to start fish farming.
