Installation of solar panels to power a vessel

Led by a private company, this project used EMFF funds to equip the catamaran ‘Franck Annie’ with solar panels to power electrical equipment on board.

With rising fuel cost and environmental impacts of fossil fuels, using solar power in the fishing sector is as important as ever. French beneficiaries used EMFF funding to equip the entire deck (from bow to the back of the boat) of the 110 m² catamaran ‘Franck Annie’ with solar panels. The battery is sized to ensure a typical summer day of operation on its own. The project is a pilot to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of such a setup before being installed on other boats from the company, as well as other companies in the Saint-Malo area.

Results

  • Reduced diesel consumption and CO2 emissions by using solar-powered equipment.
  • Lighter ships with reduced alternator size and transformer removal, enhancing fuel efficiency and safety.
  • Improved sailor comfort with enhanced electrical capacity in crew quarters.
  • Lithium battery usage multiplies capacity by four, increasing charge return and on-board comfort.
